87. Tetsujin Maru Menko Card, Japan 1963

Menko cards were issued in Japan for many years. They were issued for athletes, film stars, other famous people, and other subjects. They are thick die-cut cards that are designed to be punched out. Menko cards of real people are usually cartoon drawings of the person depicted. Thousands of Menko cards have been issued.
 
For those who didn't know at all about Menko, the word "menko" refers to a thick piece of cardboard with a picture printed on its face. They are used as toys by Japanese children in much the same way as American children might flip baseball cards. The Menko are indeed the forerunner to modern Japanese trading cards.
 
The "round" Menko are called "Maru" and the square shaped are called "Kaku".
